When I bring up EMF concerns…
Someone inevitably references Elon Musk's comment on Joe Rogan's podcast that you could make a helmet out of cell phones and it wouldn't hurt you.
With all due respect to Elon's many achievements…
This statement contradicts THOUSANDS of studies showing biological effects from EMF exposure.
Here’s what concerns me…
Our bodies evolved in a specific electromagnetic environment for millions of years.
Then, in the blink of an eye…
(evolutionarily speaking)
We've completely TRANSFORMED that environment.
EMFs are real, measurable physical phenomena that interact with our bodies in ways we're still discovering.
Today, our surroundings are saturated with non-native EMFs at levels unprecedented in history.
And the research is becoming VERY clear on the implications this can have on human health…
A recent systematic review (PMID: 33917298) found consistent evidence that RF-EMF exposure affects oxidative stress markers in cells.
(But you won't hear about this on the news, that's for sure!)
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
Study after study has found that EMF exposure can lead to:
Bottom line: this is NOT fairy dust.
Far from it…
When I measure radio frequency EMF with a proper meter, here's what I typically find:
- Background level in my Costa Rica home: ~0.5 microwatts per square meter
- At my computer with WiFi on: 20,000-40,000 microwatts per square meter
- At my WiFi router: 2.4 million microwatts per square meter
- With my cell phone on cellular mode: 2.5-3 MILLION microwatts per square meter
That's a 6,000,000x INCREASE from background levels!
It's completely bonkers when you think about it…
Your cell phone literally creates an EMF field millions of times STRONGER than what you'd experience in nature.
And unlike your WiFi router, your phone is typically carried on your body all day long.
I mean, we're basically walking around with mini microwave transmitters in our pockets right next to our reproductive organs…
(What could possibly go wrong?)
Here’s a tragic anecdote too…
When I had Ryan Blazer on the podcast (an electromagnetic engineer), he told me in a recent home assessment, he found a major electrical wiring error near where a client's dog slept.
The dog developed cancer at age 2 😢
And when they got another dog who slept in the same spot, it ALSO developed cancer.
But after fixing the wiring error, subsequent pets remained healthy.
Coincidence? Perhaps.
But this DOES correlate with the EMF research.
The issue is most people brush EMFs off because the consequences are practically silent and extremely difficult to pinpoint.
But if you're electrically sensitive to EMFs, you might experience...
And if you’re thinking, "I don't feel any of these symptoms when using my devices"
That's completely valid - sensitivity varies dramatically between individuals.
Some people can smoke cigarettes for decades with minimal apparent health effects, while others develop serious conditions.
However, my opinion is…
If you can take a few simple steps to protect yourself… why WOULDN’T you?
I’m not suggesting you need to wear a tinfoil hat and move to a cave in Montana.
In fact, the biggest levers are reasonably achievable for most people:
So, while the debate continues about exactly what exposure levels are harmful…
Taking these precautions feels like the common sense thing to do.
Remember: you don't have to implement all of these perfectly.
Just do whatever’s reasonable for you!
