A question I’m often asked is:
"Which organs should I be eating for optimal hormones?"
It’s a great question.
Hormonal health is a hotter topic than it has ever been.
Women are suffering from all kinds of hormone-related disorders with no clear answers from Western medicine…
Average male testosterone levels have taken a nose-dive over the last half century….
But as alarming as this is, it does not surprise me.
Your hormones are under constant assault.
Seed oils in your food. Microplastics. Stress. Poor sleep. Lack of sunlight. Endocrine disrupting chemicals…
All shown to negatively affect your natural hormone production.
I get that we cannot completely avoid these things…
But diet is something we have a great degree of control over.
And when you give your body the nutrient-dense foods it evolved eating for hundreds of thousands of years...
When you provide the exact vitamins, minerals, and peptides your endocrine system needs…
When you pair that with a radically healthy lifestyle…
Your hormones CAN return to optimal levels naturally.
Certain organs contain the exact nutrients your body needs to produce optimal levels of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.
So let me break down which ones are best for men and women:
For guys…
Liver is hands down the best place to start.
It's loaded with vitamin A, which is absolutely essential for testosterone production.
Vitamin A is found inside the testicular Sertoli cells in retinol form and when needed it can be converted to a more biologically active form; retinoic acid.
It's also seen in rodent studies that if there's no active vitamin A present inside the testicles, testosterone levels drop rapidly and estrogen levels inside the testes shoot up (PMID: 12141930, PMID: 30420837)
And here's a study that still blows my mind...
In this human study, 102 young boys with delayed puberty and short stature were divided into 4 groups:
The first one was a control group, the second group was given synthetic testosterone, third got vitamin A and iron supplements, and the fourth group got a combination of TRT, vitamin A, and iron (PMID: 15163330).
As you can imagine…
The control group didn't gain any significant height or begin puberty at an accelerated rate.
However, both the vitamin A group and testosterone treated group noted similar improvements in height growth, puberty rate, and testicular volume
Wild right? Vitamin A + iron was as effective as hormone replacement therapy in jump-starting puberty!
Liver also provides MASSIVE amounts of Zinc - and the research on Zinc and testosterone is crystal clear.
For instance:
Dietary Zinc restriction in normal young men was associated with a significant decrease in serum testosterone concentrations after 20 weeks of zinc restriction.
On the other hand, Zinc supplementation of marginally zinc-deficient normal elderly men for six months resulted in an increase in serum testosterone (PMID: 8875519).
What’s fascinating to me about liver is that it’s also rich in Copper…
If you’re a man pay attention to this because it’s important:
Most men think they’re supporting T levels by knocking back a ton of Zinc pills…
However, Zinc and Copper are COMPETING minerals.
Too much zinc will deplete copper from your system and vice versa.
So it’s incredible to think how nature almost “programmed” liver to contain far more balanced ratios of these.
But, I know what all the guys reading want to really talk about…
TESTICLES
In my opinion, testicles are the ultimate "like supports like" organ for men.
They contain tissue-specific peptides, hormones, and cofactors that directly support your own testosterone production.
Tons of guys report increased libido, energy, and drive after adding testicles to their diet…
(No wonder Whole Package from Heart & Soil spectacularly failed Informed Sports testing!)
Now, for the ladies reading…
Liver is just as crucial for you.
Especially if you experience heavy bleeding during menstruation and need a good source of iron which affects nearly 30% of women of reproductive age.
It provides the vitamin A, B vitamins, and minerals needed for proper estrogen and progesterone synthesis.
And if you’re trying to conceive or are pregnant, it’s a great source of folate in its most bioavailable form - crucial for preventing neural tube defects.
Beyond that…
If you’re dealing with painful periods, PMS, or irregular cycles…
Ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
These contain tissue-specific peptides like activin, inhibin, and follistatin that support female hormone production and menstrual health.
Also worth mentioning are:
Heart - provides CoQ10, which is essential for cellular energy production and hormone synthesis.
Kidney - supplies selenium and additional B vitamins that support thyroid function - and your thyroid directly impacts sex hormone production.
Bone marrow - healthy fats and fat-soluble vitamins that serve as the building blocks for all steroid hormones.
Remember: cholesterol is the backbone of every hormone in your body. If you're not getting enough saturated fat, your hormone production suffers.
So, that is everything in a nutshell…
If you can source these specific organs fresh and you enjoy eating them, that's ideal.
If not, we've made it easy with our desiccated organs at Heart & Soil.
For guys, I recommend starting with Beef Organs plus Whole Package if you want full testosterone support.
For gals, Her Package plus Beef Organs is a great combination for hormonal balance.
Remember, these aren't synthetic hormones or supplements with side effects…
These are simply the foods your ancestors ate to stay fertile, strong, and vital well into old age.
Welcome to the Remembering 🏹
